Plant Palms at the Right Time of Year

When is the best time to plant palm trees?

Consider soil conditions when planting palms in Northern and Southern California

Palms being as popular as they are in California, not many people know the best time to plant palms. Most of us know that fall is the best season to plant an ornamental tree or shrub. This gives the plant the maximum amount of time to grow roots before the first summer, which is the most stressful season for them. Our certified arborists at Arborwell Professional Tree Management will tell you that the best planting time for a palm, is quite the opposite!

Palms are tropical plants. The first winter is the most stressful period for a newly planted palm tree. Although they can be transplanted any time of the year, the best time to plant palms is during spring or early summer, when the soil temperatures are on the increase. This way the palms get 5 to 6 months to grow strong before the first frost.

Root growth is significantly reduced in many tropical palms at soil temperatures below 65°F often completely stopping below 60°F. Planting palms in spring or summer also has another advantage. The rains that follow reduce the need for supplementary irrigation and help in the critical period of establishment. The dry winter season requires more irrigation to ensure the survival of the newly planted palm.

For California, where we experience winter rains, the soil may get too wet and creates conditions for infections by pathogens. California palms, therefore, need adequate care to protect them from cold damage and infections.
